The short story is this: Bike Polo started in Ireland. It got big. Like, Olympics big. Then people stopped caring about bikes so much. Like, a lot less. For instance, Madison Square Garden’s main attraction used to be velodrome racing. Also, it used to be at Madison Square. All these things have changed though, and Bike Polo withered away into the annals of rumor and fable, except for the legit guys who play it on grass. But we don’t play on grass. And we don’t play on grass because a bunch of messengers in Seattle one day back in 1999 or so made some mallets out of found materials and came up with Bike Polo again in the parking lot behind their messenger center. The rest is history, and someone else is writing it.
Bike Polo has been played in New York since 2003. Now, our home court is The Pit at Chrystie & Broome Streets. We play there on Thursdays & Sundays. We play on a tennis court in Brooklyn on Flushing between North Portland & North Oxford on Tuesdays. We travel to tournaments in any major city you can think of and often win. We throw one or two tournaments a year ourselves, and are home to the most unique of all of them - Los Marcos Polos.
Newcomers are always welcome. Come out with a bike and we’ll loan you a mallet. It might look & sound like a dangerous sport, and it is, but we’ll take it easy on you the first few times.
