Qualifiers for the Cog Tournament
As some of you know, and others of you don’t know, we decided to hold a qualifier within our club to determine the team which will be given the outstanding invite we have to the Milwaukee COG Tournament, which is happening June 6th & 7th.
The first thing we need is to determine who is going to contend for this and participate in the qualifier. The format will be double round-robin, with each team playing two matches against every other team. Match format is 15 minutes, -no- score limit (so run it up, don’t be shy). 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss. The first place team gets the invite. If two or more teams are even on points at the end, goal differential (NOT head-to-head points earned) is the first tiebreaker… so use those 15 minutes and score a lot of goals.
Teams which intend on contending for this thing need to announce their intention to Ken Stanek or to Adam Staudt by Friday, March 27. That’s one week from now, so you have one Sunday, one Tuesday, and one Thursday practice session to sort yourselves out.
The date for the qualifier is Sunday, April 5 during the normal Sunday pickup sessions. Time is still a little bit TBD as a result of the Trackstar 24-hour race the previous day, but will likely be 3:00pm at the earliest and 5:00pm at the latest. If you have a team and you absolutely can’t play that day, we -may- be able to shift days and get all your games in against all the other teams. Every effort will be made, so if you have a solid team but can’t make it that day, let us know anyway and we’ll get it sorted.
p.s. if you’re going to try to qualify for this thing, please make sure all your teammates can actually travel and play at the tournament. Our club wants to make a good showing at this thing, so let’s be as professional as we can (I know, that’s not much, but let’s try not to half-ass it -that- much, okay?) about it.
That’s it. Stop reading and start practicing.

The dates & rules for this thing are still being worked out, but what you need to do now is get your team together & let us know if you plan on vying for the open slot that NYC has. (Doug, Paul, and Zach’s team have an automatic slot in the bracket. That was the organizer’s decision. It’s not up for debate). The amount of teams we have is directly proportional to the effort we need to put into organizing this qualifier.

Reposting for Johnny:
Johnny says “This will be putting 24 hour racers at a terrible disadvantage. I’d like it if we could get together and agree on some basic rules for this thing. It seems to me like there’s lots of stuff that’s well established in our day-to-day play (like our one-sided tap out, our cone-top goal height) but there’s disagreement over lots of other things. We need to figure out how this will be officiated too.
I’ve got no problems with the way you describe the format below adam (points, goal dif, etc), but can’t we all decide on this stuff together instead of having it decreed from above by one or two people? I think at least a handful of people are committed enough to attend meetings about these things.
Personally, I like it that we are having team play, I think (like adam says) that it’s a really good thing for our club.

Agreed that the 24-hour racers (myself and Ken included) could face tough times as a result of this scheduling; we did have a discussion about it at team night last night and, thus far, the only two teams that have committed to playing in the qualifier are ken’s team and my team. As it turns out, between just these two teams alone the scheduling is difficult. Dave won’t be back until the 5th, Chris will be in Europe on the 12th, and on the 14th Ken and Quinn are taking off with Andy, headed westward. So, 5.April really is the only day we are all going to be here and available, despite the fact that it’s not optimal.

I vote for Thursday nights as well, as long as we can get the games done before the sun goes down.
The scheduling here is rough. I’m gone as gone can be after April 12th, and half of everyone else is going out of town for things, and most of us are doing the 24 hour race, too. FWIW, Johnny & I & Doug & Chombo & Amadeo are going to win this year. ANGRIER NEIGHBORS!

I’d love to be able to turn up and play a quali on a Thursday evening before the sun goes down, but there’s no way I can make it happen. As much as I like to stretch the rules, particularly when it comes to my job while I still have it, this isn’t negotiable. It simply won’t work. And I am strongly opposed to playing any of these quali matches in the dark. That’s the kind of half-ass crap we need to avoid.
We could play it on a Saturday too, that works for me, but it doesn’t really solve the scheduling problem we have. Chris will also be gone on the 11th, Dave will also be gone on the 28th, etc…

[…] On June 6 an 7 later this summer, some farmers in the middle of the vast and stupid country of amercica is have tornamet to decide best of some part of bike polo. It very elite and INVITE ONLY. Fo some raeson, they say that not only can New York bring they best team, but is can bring ONE MORE TEAM TOO. Los Marcos, naturally, they say “Oh, that obviously us” because we even nbetter than best New York team, and tehy pretty good. Ugly, but good. So anyway, we about to say “HEY CHAKE FROM MALWOOKIE, LOS MARCOS IS COME FOR YOU TORNAMET UNLESS YOU WANT IS TO GIVE US TROPY ALREADY AND SPARE US TROUBLE OF HAVING TO DIG TUNNEL ALL THE WAY TO MALWOOKIE. TUNNELS GET AXPENSIVE, Y OTHER THAN TORNAMET, THERE ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO GO TO YOU UGLY SITY. EVER.” But then some whining doucheheads who speak in German but grew up in Minnesota or something say “waaahhhh wahhhhh, i is wants to go for Cog tornamet! I think I better and I think i can is win! waaah, I used to have a clown haircut! waaah!” So Los Marcos go “UGH OK FINE LITTLE MAN, WE HUMOR YOU IN YOU LITTLE QULAIFYING TOURNAMET”. After Los Marcos clearly win the qualifier, you can see them next in Malwookie, June 6 y 7. More news on the qualify matchings is on nycbikepolo.com […]

HEY NYC- ok so after carefully looking at the teams we have invited and who has confirmed and such. There will be allowance of the following NYC participants.
doug, zach paul have been invited due to their past performance in tourneys. johnny midwest and zack L mke have been invited to form a team beacue we want zack to see his baby and johnny has done much to keep us all safe. that leaves 2 teams left. so good luck to those vying for the spots.
obviously NYC has a deep talent pool and lots of players in that deep talent willing to travel often and far. thats what makes this a difficult decision for us here in mke on how many to allow from certain cities. the whole point to this tourny is to have the “best play the best all weekend” we wanted to have teams play tough games all weekend against the best teams across NA and europe but it doesnt seem as if any euros have expressed interest to travel to poor little mke.
here is an update because it seems like you guys really want to come to this.
so after looking at the RSVP’d cities and attendance for this, unless something goes horribly awry we will have room for in total 4 NYC teams in the invite bracket. any other teams from NYC who want to come are more than welcome to participate in the open division for a wild card shot. i hope this helps.
i feel bad that this whole thing has gotten kinda awkward due to the invite situation but it seems to have only been an issue in NYC where like i said the talent pool is deep and travel well. and i do apologize to those who are upset by this and for the confusion it seems to have caused.
so hope to see NYC’s best in MKE…cheers
-Jake
ohh and bring it on los marcos bitches

Jake, thanks that’s really generous and we all appreciate it. You’ll save us from destroying each other in the inner-club elimination process.

I think what Paul means to say is that this saves Adam the humiliation of being publicly and indisputably beaten by those he feels superior to.
Thanks Jake. This is good information to know.
